Periods 1 and 5, Due Thursday, January 31

Periods 2 and 6, Due Friday, February 1

Click this link for the instructions.

Your textbook MUST BE COVERED in illustrations and narrative where directed. Students who covered their book in a patterned paper will need to incorporate their illustrations on a separate sheet of paper and then paste it to their cover.

You MAY NOT use the printer or paper in Room 427 in order to complete this assignment. It needs to be completed prior to showing up at class.

Also, each student must submit a "blog comment" under your tab above. Make sure you leave the comment under the correct period tab or you WILL NOT receive credit for this part of the assignment. Read Chapter 13 pages 339 to end of Chapter
The American Political System

Answer only question #4 on Page 345 (Two Paragraphs) AND complete some Internet research on the upsoming 2012 elections in November.

Specifically, search for 2012 Proposed Initiatives (Ballot Initiatives) with an Economics related focus.

For Instance, I searched for initiatives and found one called  California "Sustainable California State Bank" Initiative (#11-0051)

You need to find an initiative and record the title, indicate what the number is (#11-0051) as shown above, and provide a very short summary of the initiative. In this case, the proposed initiative is to create a new State Bank, initially with $200 Million from the State General Fund, and Impose a 15% minimum tax on oil and gas extracted in California, and use the funds generated by that tax to provide capital to the state-run bank.

This homework is due at the beginning of class on Friday.

Mutual Fund Homework Due at beginning of Period!

You are to read the handout and research TWO (2) distinct and different Mutual Funds
for investment by your table. You will need to tell me the 5 letter mutual fund, and if you
have time also tell me what the NAV (Net Asset Value) is of your mutual fund.

As an example, I found the following Mutual Fund for investing in mostly Gold as a precious metal.
The Fidelity Select Gold Fund symbol is FSAGX and the NAV is $38.68.
In this case, I would purchase 130 units for about $5000.

Your information should be turned in on the back side of the Mutual Fund handout passed out on Tuesday, April 10th.

Extra Credit opportunity for any student who researches the historical price of
one ounce of GOLD purchased on the date of your birth AND also computes the current price

Reading Google Books or on Amazon.com

The Current Event for Week 8 is to locate an "Economics" themed book, or section within a book discussing a specific area of economics you would like to learn more about; to read and write about it.

Using either google books or Amazon books, locate a book and find a passage of 5 to 10 pages in length to read. After you complete the reading, write a 600 word minimum summary of what you read and include a short narrative using 2 ERP's to demonstrate your understanding of the material in economics terms.

Your completed assignment can be placed in a Dropbox that you have linked to my account (teacherhaywood@gmail.com), or sent to my email, printed, or brought to class on a flashdrive. BUT, it must be completed before Thursday when class begins.

In addition, Periods 1 and 5 should have completed the worksheet for Activity 3, the Supply and Demand Schedule before the beginning of class. Period 3 students who complete BOTH the Current Event AND the worksheet will earn double credit!

Below is what happened when I searched the Google Books site for a book on equilibrium

Dull and even boring perhaps, but I found this after just a few seconds of searching. Just remember to include 2 ERP's in your narrative summary about what you have read.

This is what happened when I searched for "sovereign debt crisis" on Amazon.com. Be sure to look for a book that shows the "Look Inside" arrow and you can read at least 5 to 10 pages of the book.

Amnesty Weekend for Economics and Sociology Students

President's Day Amnesty Weekend

This weekend, students in Economics and Sociology that are behind in certain assignments may complete the work and submit it at the beginning of the Period on Tuesday for Economics and Wednesday for Sociology. Work submitted will be awarded up to 50% credit and allow the student to earn extra credit on future assignments.

Beginning next week, only students who have completed ALL regular class assignments will be eligible to earn Extra Credit. You must get caught-up on your missing work if you intend to earn a passing grade by undertaking multiple Extra Credit assignments.

Economics Chapter 4 Quiz - Demand

All Economics students must also take the online quiz by clicking here. This 25 question quiz has one question that is a narrative and is worth 2 points so until I review your answers the maximum score you can obtain in 23 points. You only need to answer this question a single time so if you re-take the quiz, simply insert "already answered" when this question shows up in subsequent attempts.

Here is the question:
Considering the Classroom Economy simulation we have just begun, provide two or three examples of possible classroom "jobs" you could perform in addition to your regular classwork.

Think about what contributions to our class you could make at the beginning, during, and at the conclusion of each class period. There are jobs that I need help with each period.
Also, consider what actual jobs exist outside our classroom that we can simulate in the Classroom Economy where property is traded, along with balancing your checkbooks.

Finally, you should begin planning for ACTUAL potential careers and jobs SOON!

Economics HW Due Tuesday, Feb 14

Happy Valentine's Day

I was such a sweetheart, I made the time (opportunity cost) to update the blog and remind you what the homework is for tomorrow because it is not only pretty easy, but includes a 9 point Extra Credit opportunity for students who are motivated. First the homework part,

Locate the BEST rate of return in interest for a one year savings of $500. Perform an Internet search for savings or checking and interest rate, perhaps a certificate-of-deposit, and write down, or copy the URL as a blog comment. Just record the location of the institution (Bank or Credit Union, etc.) and what the rate of interest is for a one year deposit.

Also, Read Chapter 4, Section 3 and answer question #7 only on Page 107

======================

The Extra Credit is to read about Amazon.com on pages 104-105 and refresh the data in this analysis because it is more than 5 years old. What have the sales numbers been like for Amazon.com in 2005, 2008, and 2011? Tell me more about the company by looking at the financial information on finance.google.com - like the price per share, how many shares are outstanding, what is the Market Cap., etc. Why should I consider investing in this company, and most importantly, argue why you should consider focusing on this company for a possible job in the near future.

The homework and extra credit are due at the beginning of the period.

Please check tomorrow, Sunday for updated grades as I will also be enjoying our student performance at the Academic Decathlon later today.

Friday, February 3, 2012

The Current Event for this week is to locate an economics themed "podcast".

Perform an Internet search and locate an audio or video podcast, watch oe listen to a minimum of 10 minutes of the podcast and write a short narrative of 300 to 500 words. Students who compose a review of their podcast and include how one of the Nine Principle of Economic Reasoning applies to their subject MAY earn up to 5 additonal points.

The image below is from my Itunes after I searched for Economics and chose podcasts

or, click on the image below for a link to Podcast Alley

Your typed paper is due Monday at the beginning of class unless you have saved your work in a dropbox. Search this blog for "dropbox", locate the page with instructions to create your own account, and invite me to a new file folder called "yourlastname_period number" like,
haywood_period 5

Students desirous of earning up to 9 points (enough to replace one missing assignment) may do that by finding the easter egg and completing a score of 20 or more on the Unit 1 study guide quiz on Quia.

Enjoy your weekend!!!

Economics Students - Current Event due Monday, January 30
This week's Current Event (C.E.) homework is to locate an Economics Themed Blog. Try searching for a blog containing a unique name for some aspect of economics you would like to learn more about. Once you locate the hyperlink to a blog, copy-and-paste the link into the www.tinyurl.com website. The example below shows what happens to the long hyperlink when it comes out of tinyurl. It is that shorter URL that you should post as a blog comment. Try to post that comment in your class period page because it is easier for me to find your name to give you the credit for this assignment.

I searched for "Economics Blog Free Market" and received this result - http://blogs.lawrence.edu/economics/tag/free-market-monday
then, I put it through the tinyurl, com website and this is the shorter re-direct

You can also custom name your tinyurl like this

Remember, your illustrated File Folder is due on Tuesday, January 31!

You may find the Wordle.net website here.

Finally, your Current Event for this week is to locate a song (popular music to archane to music that
