Prezi Presentation

Students who choose to prepare a "Prezi" will find this link rather instructive. Check it out!

A Prezi instructional in less than 15 minutes

Both American Government and Intro to Psychology students may utilize this new and exciting presentation product during the Dead Week of school to either earn recovery-credit in Government, or Extra Credit for the Final Presentations in Psychology.

Some thoughts, though.

  1. The presentation program may be time-intensive to learn, so be patient.
  2. I have only been able to load music and video that are in Flash. You might need to learn Flash in order for take maximum potential with your presentation.
  3.  I have not yet been able to load a .pdf file, but I have used .jpg for images with no problems.
  4. Be careful with the use of the "path" feature so as not to make your audience "seasick". Motion sickness is a "known issue" with this presentation product.
For American Govt., you are to compose a Prezi on any chapter within Unit 5 - the Judicial Branch. Choose an area of interest that excites you and bring the information in our book alive with your presentation. Consider adding features for political dictionary, key concepts, and numerous images to your presentation. Also, you could include the CA content standard(s) for the chapter you are highlighting.

For Intro to Psychology - do something similar with the Chapter area of focus you have committed to. Include the major theme and utilize the Prezi area as though it is a GRAPHIC ORGANIZER.

Investigate the different areas of Prezi for other presentation ideas, and HAVE SOME FUN!!

American Govt. Students

Beginning today, you have through the Thanksgiving Holiday to complete the following TWO assignments on the www.quia.com website.

1) Complete EACH of the five Chapter Quizzes. Each quiz is 5 questions and you may take the quiz as many times as you choose to obtain the highest score possible. Each attempt at a quiz will give you (5) Five questions.

Again, you must complete ALL FIVE quizzes prior to Monday morning, November 29.

2) Accumulate 60 minutes (1 hour) of ACTIVITY TIME doing the different activities I have included for your review.

Each additional 60 minutes you accumulate will earn 9 points, up to ONE letter grade towards your FINAL GRADE.

YOU MUST USE YOUR QUIA SIGN-ON AND "ENTER" THE SPECIFIC CLASS PERIOD IN ORDER TO ACCUMULATE CREDIT.

Now, to get started with 5 Extra Credit points, post a comment to THIS SPECIFIC POST, including your Period Number, First Name and Last Name Initial. Ideally, you will sign your post with your First Name and Last Name Initial similar to my example below.

Am. Govt. - How I Invested in Veteran's Day, and other Extra Credit.

How cool is this? Just on the 'eve of Mr. Haywood inputting the 15 Week grades there are multiple opportunities for students to add credit before I finalize grades. Oh Boy!

Recall our conversations about the recent changes to President Obama's abilitity to move the country forward based on the most recent election results in selecting Congressmen and Women. I would offer that part of President Obama's problems with the American voter today is a real or perceived concern over his "Leadership".

For up to 9 points, read Page 376 and complete the "Test for Success" on President Obama. You must also include 30 minutes of Internet review and incorporate what you find regarding Obama's Leadership concerns in your work product. Include the hyperlinks to your sources. (in other words, cite your source.)

**Instructions for Unit 4 Graphic Organizer/Study Guide**
Look at the image above for the reminder that your Unit 4 Graphic Organizer is due either Monday, November 15 for Periods 1 and 5, or Tuesday, November 16 for Period 2.

The 8 page graphic organizer is your study guide for this unit and MUST include a minimum of one page for each chapter, number 13, 14, 15, 16 & 17. DO NOT INCLUDE ANY MATERIAL ALREADY COVERED IN THE 8 PARAGRAPH ASSIGNMENT YOU HAVE ALREADY COMPLETED.

Some suggestions for this activity are as follows:
  1. include at least 2 Political Dictionary terms for each chapter
  2. illustrate chapter charts, graphs, or timelines
  3. Choose one area of interest in each chapter and summarize that area in a drawing or illustration.
  4. use the weekend to look up current events or other resources that you can add to the graphic organizer.
  5. Look up the publisher's online quiz and predict possible questions and include them in your study guide.
Next week, we may trade these Graphic Organizer/Study Guides for use in a 25 question Unit 4 quiz. Pretend your organizer will be used by a student in another period than yours.

This assignment is worth 9 points, but the extra credit value for a superior organizer makes the assignment worth up to 18 points.

American Government Mid-Term Preparation

All Government Students may begin their preparation for the mid-term by utilizing the http://www.quia.com/ website and "view"ing their class. Use the procedures previously indicated on this blog for creating a FREE quia Student account and once you have logged on to the website, enter the Period Class you belong to so you may accumulate 'time' in the activities section as the images below will show.

This first image is shows how the screen appears once you have successfully logged-in. Notice the "view" buttons under the Class section on the right hand side.
After you have selected your Class by clicking the View link, your next page will display where YOU MUST be within your account in order to begin accumulating time

I will continue to add "activities" I find that other teachers have created as well as ones I will be creating through next week. For each 60 minutes of time you accumulate exploring these activities, you will earn 9 points credit that may be applied to your Mid-Term score on the 50 Question Test covering Units 1 and 2.

In addition, the previous Extra Credit opportunity for completing research on H.Ross Perot as a leading independent candidate for President during the 1992 and 1996 elections will remain in effect until Monday, October 18 at 3:15 pm. Students who complete a research analysis of Perot's involvement in the 1992 election and how it helped determine the outcome we have experienced in nearly 20 years since, may earn up to 9 additional points, depending on the quality of your research and presentation.

Finally, as we approach the November 2 election in California, there are multiple propositions on the ballot that the electorate may not be fully aware of. By conducting a minimum of 60 minutes Internet research on a particular ballot measure and completing a posterboard presentation (or Powerpoint, or some other form), you may earn up to 9 Extra Credit Points.

There is no possible way to accumulate more than a letter grade improvement in your semester-to-date grade to the end of this week in October. In other words; if, after this week, you have earned a failing grade of 40% (or other percentage), NO AMOUNT OF EXTRA CREDIT YOU COMPLETE PRIOR TO THE 10 WEEK PROGRESS REPORT WOULD MOVE YOUR LETTER GRADE ABOVE A "D". Students currently with D grades may move up to a "C", a "C" to a "B", and students who have already earned an "A" may add additional credit to their grade. Yes. It is possible for a student to earn sufficient credit that opting out of the scantron portion of the Final Exam in December would still result in an "A" grade. These students would be completing the essay portion of the Final only.
