Economics - P 1

Extra Credit due by Monday at 8:00am by clicking this link!

Some previous assignments you may have missed are indicated below.

Assignment for Periods 1 and 5 on Thursday, February 21

Complete a minimum of 60 minutes additional work on the Gen I Revolution financial literacy website and accumulate points for completing the missions.

Some students may have been absent the day we were in the Tech Lab last and need to create their account. It is important for Period 1 students to use Class Code 7a3036 when establishing a new account. Ask a fellow student for assistance if need be.

Please see the substitute teacher for the list of student usernames for these periods. If you are completely unable to login to your existing account then you will have to make a new account. ALL STUDENTS SHOULD BE ABLE TO FINISH ONE MISSION TODAY!

Table leaders that finish should login to stockmarketgame.com and invest your REMAINING monies in new stocks, following the same rules we have used – stock purchase of 100 shares minimum, no stock selling for under $5 per share nor more than $250 per share (you’ll get locked-out and be unable anyway). Perhaps learn about “selling a stock short” and place an order to sell a stock you feel might lose value short. For instance, I have a teacher account and I sold JCPenney short yesterday, meaning my position is that I sold it for $20.21 and I am hoping the stock will LOOSE value between now and April when I can buy it for less than $20.00, say $18.00 a share. If that happens, I will earn a profit on the difference between what I sold it for and what I bought it for ($2.00 per share)

Many of your trades from Tuesday did not happen. Either table leaders did not execute the trades, or there was some kind of error. In either case, please spend some time today and try to use your remaining funds for investments. We will go over your strategies on Monday.

Some older assignments many of you have not yet finished are below:

Assignment to discover what you can learn about Economics using the Internet –
Write one page ONLY, including the URL link to the source of your finding about a subject, topic, or concept in Economics that you researched using the Internet. This could be a blog, Youtube video, khanacademy.org video, economics-themed or financial literacy themed website such as www.fool.com, or other source such as ITunes University.
The point is to discover FREE resources using the technology most of you have at home and learn about economics in a way that is different from how we learn in the classroom. I realize some students will have to utilize our school library, CSUN, or a public library to complete this assignment and that is why I limited it to only ONE page, not two-sided, and NOT on more than one piece of paper. For students that  missed the original deadline last week (periods 1 and 5), you may earn 55% credit by completing an EXEMPLARY job in the tech lab on Thursday, Feb. 21. Try saving your assignment to an electronic locker such as Edline.net or a cloud like dropbox or Google Drive. Then send an email or invite me to view your assignment at teacherhaywood@gmail.com
Additionally, due over a week ago -

Read Chapter 4, Section 3 and complete the following critical thinking activities:
  1. The Critical Thinking Skill on Page 108
  2. Thinking Critically #'s 1 and 2 on Page 110

  1. Write one paragraph Thinking Like an Economist on Page 111

For the assignment, you can find news about economics online on newspaper websites, because there is always economic stuff there. There are also videos all over youtube of people ranting about things like the fiscal cliff.

Hey Mr. Haywood! My understanding of ways we can use the internet to learn about Economics is looking up music as well as the ones we have played in class to use as a resource when a specific song has lyrics that are performed in an economic value. Researching either music, videos, even blogs that are about Economics is a great use of internet and time to complete homework through different learning strategies online.

Economics is such a talked about subject on tv shows such the colbert report and the daily show, these shows can also be viewed on the internet (you could also youtube economics and the videos should give you a better understanding of economics itself). There's also an endless amount of bloggers who talk about economics day and night including http://marginalrevolution.com/ and http://www.calculatedriskblog.com/

Hey Mr. Haywood! Buying and selling on Ebay is a good way to follow economics because items are bought and sold at their current value which is always changing.

Hi Mr.Haywood, I found two great ways to learn about economics. We should have a Career Day where we invite Entrepreneurs to speak to us so we get valuable information from experienced people. Another way would be to have puzzles to learn vocabulary words. I hope this helps, goodnight :)

With economics being such a broad topic, the usage of internet will allow an individual to dissect the universal topics of economics of production, consumption, and transfer of wealth. Beyond the resource of the internet, economics will enhance our scarcity that will allow us to make smarter decisions in our lives.

We can use blogs to learn about economics so we can see other peoples opinions about a certain situation. We can also use videos to observe what is happening in our economy

Hey Mr. Haywood after search I found YouTube is a great way to find information on economic related topics. Also checking out the NASDAQ is a good way to keep up with stocks or just learn about trends and what goods are on the rise or how evens affect the rise or downfall for certain goods.
